So you discover that you have an ESOL student in your class. NOW WHAT? Well, you are supposed to be documenting the types of ESOL strategies that you are using. That is found on a matrix in the ESOL handbook. (COME SEE ME IF YOU NEED ONE.) Another thing that you can do is develop you lesson plans to follow the five phase sequence recommended for English language learners.
1. Preparation
In this phase the teacher finds out what students already know about
the new material to be studied.
2. Presentation
New information is presented and explained to students.
3. Practice
Students are provided with opportunities to engage in hands-on and
exploratory discussions of the concepts presented during phase two.
4. Evaluation
Students are led to determine the effectiveness of their own learning
efforts. Students can check the level of
their performance so that they can gain and understanding of what they have
learned and identify any areas that need review.
5. Expansion
This phase is to help students integrate new information and skills
into their existing conceptual framework.
This is the five phases in a nutshell.
I have specific content examples available. Come by and see me in room 404 and I’d be happy
to show you.
