Week 9-ESOL

Literature and Composition for ESOL Students

When it comes to reading and writing for ESOL students some strategies work better than others do.

·        Students should develop the ability to comprehend, appreciate, and learn from different types of text; develop the ability to communicate ideas and express own insights in written form.

·        Traditional instruction includes graded basal readers and drills for phonics, spelling, and grammar.

·        Current approaches stress an interactive process; authentic texts, process writing, and integration of language skills predominate.

·        Integrated language instruction is organized around themes, which can be explored through a variety of types of text, including content area subjects.

Reading and writing can be the most difficult for students to grasp.  If you need additional support materials or strategies, stop the ESOL area and we can help you.  ESOL materials are located in Room 404 and the phone extensions are 289 and 292.
