When it comes to reading and writing for ESOL students some strategies work better than others do.
·
Students should develop the
ability to comprehend, appreciate, and learn from different types of text;
develop the ability to communicate ideas and express own insights in written
form.
·
Traditional instruction
includes graded basal readers and drills for phonics, spelling, and grammar.
·
Current approaches stress an
interactive process; authentic texts, process writing, and integration of
language skills predominate.
·
Integrated language
instruction is organized around themes, which can be explored through a variety
of types of text, including content area subjects.
Reading and writing can be
the most difficult for students to grasp.
