Week #5

                                      ESOL AND CHEATING

Plagiarism – Most ESOL students do not understand the concept of cheating or copying material.  Asian students are commended for using material from leaders or heroes.  Many Hispanic cultures encourage collaboration as a means to an end.  Therefore, “do your own work” is completely foreign to most of them.  (Sorry, no pun intended! J) This can be frustrating for both teacher and student.

HELPFUL HINTS

1.     Explain the concept in basic terms.

2.     Give concrete examples using visuals.

3.     Explain how “cheating” can affect student performance and academic outcomes.
