Many teachers require presentations as a part of their classwork. Because of a fear of speaking English, most ESOL students would rather take a “0” than speak in front of a peer group.
HINTS
1.
Pair the ESOL student with
someone from class who speaks his/her first language.
2.
Demonstrate a “model”
presentation.
3.
Provide information
regarding guidelines for presentations, i.e. a handout, notes, rubric.
4.
Provide an appropriate
alternative for ESOL students. Perhaps a
visual presentation rather than a verbal one, or allow the presentation to be
given in the student’s first language and use a peer translator.
