The
Flanagan Winter Guards were founded in 1996, the same year as the school.
After a successful first marching band season, the instruction of Tim
Lee helped to bring the guard to the indoor performance arena. For the
first several years of its existence, the winter guard competed exclusively
in the South Florida Winter Guard Association circuit, initially in
the Novice class. Within two years, the group was promoted to A class,
that’s to the continued efforts of Tim Lee, and the technical
assistance of Nikki Drake, a former captain of the Cooper City High
School Color Guard. During its third year, the guard
branched out into competition on the regional level, making appearances
at the Winter Guard International Regionals in both Tampa and Miami,
Florida. Each performance brought a new level of success
and recognition. By
the 1998 season, the program had expanded
to two units, competing in the A and
Novice classes. Through out the next few years the guard continued to
grow under the instruction of Daniel Helton, Bradley Watkins, Ricky
Garcia, Christine Nemeth and 
Amy
Hernandez. In 2001, Dean Broadbent, Emma Roberts, Shawna Boone, and
Hayden Rhodes moved to Pembroke Pines and stated teaching the Flanagan
Color Guards. In 2002, the A guard and Open guard both moved up to the
next highest level of competition. The Novice guard moved to B class
where they stayed until 2004 where they were promoted to A class. The
top guard moved to
Scholastic Open class winning the SFWGA championship two years in a
row as well as receiving the Bronze Metal at the Winter Guard International
World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. The Open Guard was promoted to
Scholastic World Class for 2004 and placed 8th at the World Championships
in San Diego, California. The Flanagan World Guard has been a World
Class Finalist ever since, placing 5th at the 2006 Championships. In
2007 the World Guard placed 4th place and Won the World Championship
in 2008, replacing the 10 time Scholastic World Champions, James Logan
Hs.
