Approaching the Text
Methods of During

Types of
reading should vary while approaching the “during” stage of reading. Try one of the many strategies listed below!
Teacher
Read Aloud (Choral Reading and Cloze
o
Slow
down-read at a relaxed pace that will allow all students to follow along.
o
Use
expression- this helps with comprehension and sets a standard for students to
follow.
o
Have
students follow along- students should point as the teacher reads. Say “finger freeze” when you want to ask a
question or do a change-up in the reading procedure so students don’t lose
their place.
o
Think Aloud as you read- Summarize, paraphrase, visualize, predict, and then ask
students to do the same thing back to you.
Choral
o
Read
a passage with your students
o
Read
at a moderate rate
Cloze
o
Read
the passage aloud and delete “meaningful” words
o
Pause
or say “everyone”
o
Have
students say the words
Silent
Guided
o
Pose
a pre-reading question or set a purpose
o
Tell
the students the exact starting and stopping points. Give a time limit.
o
Instruct
students to give you a signal when they are finished (place your book up, look
up, put thumb up, etc..)
o
When
80% of class is finished, move on. This
will encourage those who lag behind to increase time on task and try to keep up
with the rest of the class.
o
Teachers
should walk around and monitor silent reading
o
After
80% of students are finished, ask students to sequence, summarize, or state the
main idea of what they read.
Shared/Paired
o
Students
are paired with a reading partner one
is the “reader” and the other is the “coach”.
o
The
reader reads the first paragraph or assigned reading selection out loud to the
“coach”.
o
After
reading, the coach summarizes the main idea of the selection and discusses any
supporting details necessary for understanding.
The coach can ask the reader questions to help clarify the reading.
o
The
students reverse roles; the new “reader” reads the next paragraph to the
“coach”.
o
The
new “coach” summarizes the main idea of the paragraph and discusses any
supporting details necessary for understanding.
o
Students
continue alternating roles to read and summarize as they complete the passage.
o
Students
complete a follow-up activity.
