U.T.A.P. ( URBAN TEACHING ACADEMY PROGRAM )

This "Academy within an Academy elective is a program designed to help and guide any college-bound student interested in the field of teaching.

Prerequisites: Level 3 FCAT scores

Entry to program by 9 th or 10 th grade


UTAP is a program created to afford Flanagan and other select high school students the opportunity to receive tuition scholarships and guaranteed career positions through the exploration of education as a career choice.

UTAP I grade 9

Curriculum includes the exploration of education as a possible career choice. It includes basic communication skills, opportunities in education research, visits to local college campuses, and guest speakers in the field of education. UTAP I students will begin their 4 year portfolio.
Service hours are granted for UTAP workshops.

UTAP II grade 10
Prerequisite: successful completion of UTAP I, 3.0 GPA, as required by cooperating colleges.
Students of UTAP II will begin visits to local elementary schools where they will mentor and teach younger students. Curriculum also includes continuation of UTAP portfolio, covering time management, decision-making skills, curriculum, teaching and learning strategies, theories of intelligence, philosophies of teaching, and education history. Students will prepare for FCAT, SAT, and CPT.
Service hours are granted for elementary visits and UTAP workshops.


UTAP III, IV 11, 12th grade
Prerequisite: successful completion of UTAP I and II. Suggested 3.0 GPA, as required by cooperating colleges

Students will be guided through the college selection, application, and scholarship/grant application processes, (FAFSA included). Students will further develop their portfolios to include preparation for UTAP Senior Practicum. College-level education information will be researched in preparation for a professional portfolio. Students will continue teaching and mentoring at the elementary and high school level. Curriculum will include: research for careers, practice and use of the lesson plan, teaching competencies, differentiation of instruction, and public speaking skills.
Service hours are granted for elementary visits and UTAP workshops.

Upon the completion of UTAP program requirements, students will be able to attend a participating college at little or no cost to them.
