The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in the fundamentals of
formal and informal oral communication. Students will receive an introduction
to the skills and forms of both formal and informal oral communication.

Debate I is designed to provide instruction in the fundamentals of argumentation
and problem solving. Students in this course will study logical thinking, organization
of facts, and speaking skills. Students will also study basic concepts of debate.
They will practice research skills related to debate topics; they will also
participate in frequent interscholastic competition on the national debate topics,
fundamentals of argumentation and problem solving. The course may include experiences
in interscholastic team competition. Honors credit available upon reaching appropriate
course and competition requirements.

Debate II continues development of skills related to debate and forensic activities.
Instruction includes frequent practice in principles of effective communication
for specific purposes, especially as these principles apply to argumentation
and debate skills. This course will also provide opportunities to participate
in debate activities related to the national high school debate topic, and may
include experiences in interscholastic competition. Honors credit available
upon reaching appropriate course and competition requirements.

Fine Arts. NCAA.
Debate III is designed to provide continued instruction in skills and techniques
applicable to debate activities. This course provides continued instruction
in selection and preparation of debate topics, elements of argumentation, the
use of proof, preparation of debate briefs, cross-examination techniques, and
practice in conventional and cross-examination debates. Experiences in interscholastic
competition as sanctioned by the Florida Forensics Program are a required part
of this course. Honors credit available upon reaching appropriate course and
competition requirements.
6220 (1007360T) DEBATE IV

+ Prerequisite: Debate III and teacher approval
+ Note: Elective credit in English. Meets gradua- tion requirements for Performing
Fine Arts. NCAA.
Debate IV provides opportunities for participation in advanced debate activities,
with increasing emphasis upon the application of skills in formal debates. Units
of study will include discussion, analysis, and brainstorming in case construction,
refutation, cross-examination, attack and defense, and written and oral critiques.
Interscholastic competition is a class requirement. Honors credit available
upon reaching appropriate course and competition requirements.
