Chorus H/L provides instruction in basic vocal techniques and singing styles. Emphasis will be placed on breathing, diction, range extension, ear-training, reading, and sightsinging. This class is designed for students who enjoy singing and want to reach a higher goal towards performing as well as learn legitimate choral music and basic music theory.

Chorus I-VI is a large performing chorus for mixed voices (SATB). Emphasis will be placed on the rehearsal and performance of quality choral literature from a variety of periods and styles. Skills and concepts for vocal performance will be developed. Activities include concerts, District Festival, All State Chorus, evaluations, and local and state performances.

Vocal ensemble I-IV and Adv. Chorus V-VI provides performance opportunities in small, specifically-voiced ensembles for serious students who display a high degree of motivation, talent, and musical/vocal skills. Instruction will provide for the further development and refinement of vocal production techniques and music literacy, particularly sight singing. Emphasis will be placed on the rehearsal and performance of choral literature in the style or styles in which the group wishes to specialize. The Madrigals are Flanagan's main performing group and is limited to 16 singers.

Guitar I provides instruction for students with an interest in learning the guitar. It includes a study of music fundamentals, performance techniques, and interpretation of notation including chord symbols. A variety of music is introduced to the student. Individualized instruction will be available. Student performance standards will determine the levels of assignment and achievement. Guitar II will place greater emphasis on ensemble performance.

Keyboard provides instruction for students with an interest in learning the keyboard. It includes a study of music fundamentals, performance techniques, and interpretation of notation. Color Guard provides large group instruction and performance experiences throughout the year through different activities. The guard participate in marching band during the fall and continues throughout the winter performing at indoor arenas. The guard learns the fundamentals of equipment (flags, rifles, sabers) while placing an emphasis on dance skills. Although dance experience is not required, students with skills in movement are encouraged to audition. Fees are assessed by the band booster organization for participation. Summer and winter camps as well as after school rehearsals are mandatory.

Music theory enables students to understand the analysis of musical fundamentals, and their use in various historical periods. The content should include, but not be limited to, the following: exploration of the structure of music composition through written analysis and performance; ear training; composition; arrangement; four-part harmony; analysis of musical events and elements in a composition, evaluation of music and musical performances; connection between music and other subject areas; roles and influences of music and musicians in history, culture, society, and everyday life.

Advanced Placement Music Theory is designed to develop a student’s ability to recognize and understand the basic materials and processes in any music that is heard or read in score. Much stress will be on the development of fundamental aural, notational, and performance skills. The course will culminate in the taking of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Exam. This course is recommended for only the highest motivated student.
