DIRECTORS

Steve Rivero, Director of Bands
Prior to coming to Flanagan High School, Mr. Stephen K. Rivero was the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at Hialeah High School. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Miami in 1995, and was named the Honor Graduate for the School of Music. Mr. Rivero was also honored to receive the Hialeah High School Teacher of the Year Award in 2002.
He is presently in the process completing his Graduate Degree in Wind Conducting at Florida International University.

Mr. Rivero is currently the Associate Conductor of the 13th Army Band, as well as the Conductor of the North Miami Community Concert Band. Mr. Rivero has performed with many artists such as Jose Luis Rodriguez, "El Puma," Bob Mintzer, The Brecker Brothers, Duffy Jackson, Slide Hampton, and J.J. Johnson. He has been a member of several professional organizations during his career, including the Florida Bandmasters Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, Music Educators National Conference, and the Florida Music Educators Association. Mr. Rivero has also served as Chairman for District 16 of the FBA.

Under his direction, the Hialeah Wind Orchestra, Marching Band, and Concert Jazz Band have all received Straight Superior Ratings at all Florida Bandmasters Association District Evaluations for the past ten years. In 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2006, the Wind Orchestra was awarded the distinguished Otto J. Kraushaar Award for Straight Superiors at the State Concert Festival. In 2006, the Wind Orchestra traveled to Washington D.C. to compete in the Dixie Classic National Adjudicator’s Invitational and were crowned National Champion.


 

DIRECTORS
Dean Broadbent, Assistant Band Director & Color Guard Director
Mr. Broadbent is a graduate of Western Connecticut State University. Prior to coming to Flanagan in 2001, Mr. Broadbent taught music at Samuel Staples Elementary School in Easton, Connecticut. He marched from 1990-1992 in the Connecticut Hurricanes senior drum and bugle corps and with the 1993-1996 Cadets of Bergen County. Mr. Broadbent has teaching experience with the 1997 Boston Crusaders, and with the Cadets from 1998 to the present, including a year as the Color guard caption head in 2001. Other color guard teaching experiences include Danbury HS, Connecticut from 1994 to 1998, Norwalk HS, Connecticut from 1998 to 2001, the 2001 St. Anns World bronze medallist, and the 2002 Braddock Independent color guards.






DIRECTORS
Rick Miles, Assistant Band Director

Mr. J. Eric Miles has had 37 years of music education experience. He is in his sixth year as orchestra director at C. W. Flanagan H.S.. During his tenure at South Plantation High School, his bands played for the launching of the nuclear powered submarine San Francisco, performed in the Cotton, Orange and Cherry Blossom Festivals, the 1982 World's Fair, and for President Gerald Ford. The band was selected as the Florida State Bicentennial Honor Band, representing Walt Disney World in performances throughout the state. This honor culminated in being the featured band at Walt Disney World for the week of July 4th, 1976.Mr. Miles is a member of FBA and has served as District Chairman on two occasions. He was selected as the FMEA Middle School All-State Band clinician in 1992. As a member of the American School Band Directors Association, he has served as President of the Florida Delegation, representing Florida at national functions. He was named Hollywood Jaycees Educator of the Year and Teacher of the Year at three different schools, and twice nominated for Arts Teacher of the Year. Mr. Miles has performed with local orchestras and community bands and has spent six seasons in the Gold Coast Opera where he performed with such artists as Roberta Peters, Jerome Hines, and Ron Gaines. He now serves as an adjudicator and clinician throughout Florida. Thirty-one of his former students teach or have taught band, chorus, or orchestra, two are presently successfully published composers, and four are in college preparing for careers in music education.
