Presentation of Final SIP Plan

We have set our goals higher because we achieved our goals from last year.  We also have a high school reform objective, which not every school has.  We are using an 8 step process which included the utilization of Virtual Counselor and other remediation strategies for those scoring in the lowest 30th percentile.  Please refer to SIP plan included in SAC packet.  Teachers are urged to post the SIP plan in their classrooms.

SAC By-Laws for 2005-2006

Our by-laws are taken from a template and adapted to our school.  Please refer to the by-laws included in the SAC packet.

Report from academic coaches – mini assessments

Peggy Evans spoke on our writing progress.  We are currently one writing assessment behind but we will catch up at the beginning of the new marking period.  For the first writing assessment, which was a persuasive prompt, 88% of our 9th and 10th graders achieved a level 3 and 50+% achieved a level 4 or higher.  A team of eight readers from Flanagan scored these writing samples.  The next prompt will be expository.  It is our hope that, with this increase in practice, our students’ writing will peak in time for the FCAT Writing Test.

Joyce Hawkins also discussed the mini-assessments being given to all 9th and 10th students (regardless of course level).  There are some adjustments being made to the assessments prior to their dissemination.  In addition to these district mini-assessments, the mathematics teachers are embedding their lessons with all the standards.

Carol Sheppard reported for Mary Cook on the reading mini-assessments that are being given in the 9th and 10th grade Language Arts classes.  Students who have not passed the FCAT are also working closely with Ms. Cook.  Mini-assessments are being given to students with each strand being tested twice to reinforce the concepts

Dr. Sharon Shaulis spoke about the importance on the FCAT Explorer.  This programs needs to be utilized by all students who are taking this test.  She is putting homework online for students who can access the FCAT Explorer through their home computers or libraries.  The assignment will involve one passage a week.  The FCAT Explorer program covers all benchmarks and gives immediate feedback.  There are also sample tests included.  The Falcon Foundation will be randomly pulling students who are utilizing the program and awarding prizes.

Discussion of Parent Member’s Volunteer Forms/ Level II Screening

Parents and community members are urged to fill out volunteer hours on the log forms.  If Flanagan can log in double the number of hours volunteered by community members and parents as the students enrolled, we can receive the Golden School Award.  Also, all persons who are contracted with the school board (construction workers, vendors, officials, chaperones for day drips out of the county or overnight field trips) must obtain a level II screening (fingerprinting) before they can work near students.  Volunteers and chaperones for day field trips must obtain a level I screening (background check).   Please see Luisa Nardi or Chip Osborn for the form to get fingerprinted if need be.  There is no charge and you can get fingerprinted at the K.C. Wright building.

New Business

The October meeting has been changed to October 10.  FHS is in line to receive recognition funds for receiving an improved school grade.  The school must decide by November 1st how to disperse these funds.  If the school cannot come up with a decision, the monies will be allocated to the instructional staff.

Closing Remarks

Meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
