English Dept. Plans for Meeting New FCAT Writing Test Requirements- Pat Knaus
They are working on getting students to a higher FCAT writing score by using
elaboration- support and detail. She has given teachers some ideas for students
to use to elaborate on ideas. They are also focusing on the multiple choice
questions that are added to the writing test. This also goes along with the
PSAT and new SAT. Peggy Evans and Pat Knaus have worked on a sample test for
students. Teachers will work on grammar also.
Interim Measure of Progress- Mr. Osborn and Mrs. Sheppard
To prepare for FCAT, Flanagan will be doing pullout of students for extra support
for reading and writing. Ms. Evans will be visiting English classes before FCAT
Writes. The BAT scores were discussed. Results were encouraging overall. There
were questions about how to identify the lowest 25%. PSAT scores are in and
will be discussed at the next meeting. We are hoping to use PSAT scores to place
students in Honors and AP classes.
SAF Report- Jill Klosenberg
Advisory discussed the policy to reduce grades for unexcused absences. They
voted they did not want absences to affect grades.
Camera phones will be added to the school board policy. They should be turned
off and out of sight.
Final Exams- Advisory hasn't decided what their stand is on finals-should they
help or hurt a grade?
There is concern about teachers who haven't completed lesson plans and that
students will be tested on information they haven't been taught.
Advisory would like for 9th graders to see a counselor. They want students to
receive more information about college alternatives.
Henry Rose reported that Pembroke Pines is proposing a $100 million bond. If
it passes, Flanagan would receive $500,000 for athletic facility improvement.
There was no new business
The meeting was adjourned at 5:20p.m.
