Report from academic coaches

Joyce Hawkins reported as the mathematics coach.  68% of our student population scored at a level 3 or higher on the mathematics portion of the FCAT.  We are aiming for 70%.  This year’s textbooks better tie into the school’s goals.  Those students from our feeder schools who scored at low levels were placed in pre-algebra classes for remedial instruction.  Remediation is also occurring through training on the appropriate use of the calculator, approved software, and online help through publishing companies geared towards student achievement.  There are plenty of resources to help prepare students for the FCAT.  Teachers are also engaged in vertical teaming where teachers of Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, and so forth collaborate to know what lessons have been taught to reduce overlapping and increase students’ chances of success.

Peggy Evans reported as the writing coach.  A handout of the School Public Accountability Report was made available to those present.  Reading, writing, and mathematics scores were printed on the handout.  Scores from last year and the year prior to last year comparing Flanagan to the district and state were on the handout.  Students needing help with FCAT strategies should look on the school website for helpful tips.  In November, there will be a diagnostic essay to see how students are doing.  Currently, students need extra practice with expository prompts.  Peggy will visit all 10th grade classrooms.  Peggy also informed us that there will be an upcoming multiple choice grammar section on the new FCAT.  Teachers will receive instructional material as soon as it becomes available.

Discussion of Parent Member’s Volunteer Forms

Parents and community members are urged to fill out volunteer hours on the log forms.  If Flanagan can log in double the number of hours volunteered by community members and parents as the students enrolled, we can receive the Golden School Award.

School Site Boundary Conference

Flanagan had to brainstorm two more proposals to be used in the case of severe overcrowding.  As a group, we decided to submit the following two ideas:  enrollment capping and double sessions.  The two currently approved are as follows: effective use of space (having teachers float) and a flexible school day (BCC, early graduation).

SAF Issues

The school board has voted to allow high school students to self administer over the counter medications.  Students are not allowed to distribute them to friends.

New Business

There is a new phone system in place designed to have better communication with parents.  So far, 87% of parents have been effectively contacted.  Three messages have gone out so far.  Calls have been made twice per month with live operators.

Closing Remarks

Meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
